POLICIES & PROCEDURES
The Explorers program is a fee-based program available to students at East who wish to pursue after school interests. Please read the following registration procedures and policies thoroughly as you consider after school activities for your child. The following ensures a safe and successful after school program.
REGISTRATION
Registration Online Begins Thursday, September 19th at 10am
Please make certain you have a "Household Account" with your student as a "member" of the household before trying to register
Parents may register online at www.hinghamrec.com or by calling the Hingham Rec office at 781-741-1464
Registration is on a first come, first served basis
Your child’s participation in a given course is confirmed through an email receipt confirming payment
If your child has an allergy, please note that when registering in the medical alert note section
DISCIPLINE
Students are to meet the same expectations for behavior as for the regular school day. Students should show care and respect to the instructor and their peers. If a child’s behavior becomes a disruption, parents will be notified and the appropriate course of action will be followed, which can include dismissal from the program with no refund. By registering your child, you agree to the terms of the programs.
DISMISSAL & SAFETY PROCEDURES
Explorers children are dismissed first at the end of the day. They should listen to the announcement which says “Explorers Students report to the gym.” They should bring their coat and backpack as if they are leaving for the day. All children will be picked up at the gym by parent or guardian at 4:05pm (unless otherwise stated in program description). Please park and enter the gym to pick up your child. To ensure the safety of the children, please have your ID ready. If your child will be walking home or picked up by someone other than the parent, please call the Hingham Rec office.
OFF-SITE & PERFORMANCE CLASSES
Please note the course descriptions to see if your child’s course has a last class share, performance, or off-site workshop. We encourage parent or guardian attendance.
ABSENTEE POLICY
Please notify the Hingham Rec at 781-741-1464 before 2pm if your child is unable to attend class that day. There are no make-up classes or refunds for student absences. In the event an instructor is absent, parents will be notified as soon as possible and students will be sent home at their normal dismissal time. If we are unable to reach you, the student will remain in the school office until a parent can be reached.
Program Descriptions Fall 2024
Arts and Crafts
Gr. K-2 (Tuesdays 10/1-10/29)
Gr. 3-5 (Thursdays 10/3-10/31)
Come get the creative juices flowing! Our Rec Crafts program will work with paper folding, paint, design, specialized projects and so much more! This class is perfect for all grades as projects will be modified for the grade level, with help available if necessary. Please send artists with clothing that is ok to get messy!

Board Game Night
Gr. K-5 (Wednesdays 10/9– 10/30) No Class 10/23
It's time to put away the controllers and the online multiplayers and break out the table and face-to-face battleship sinking. We want to get them excited about Risk, and Life, Checkers and maybe even Parcheese. For an hour we will harken back to the days where you tell someone they forgot to say Uno with a wry smile on your face that they can actually see.

Cookie & Cupcake Decorating
Gr. K-2 (Mondays 9/30-10/28) No Class 10/14
Gr. 3-5 (Fridays 10/4-11/1)
A creative cookie and cupcake decorating class, Betsy will provide fun and unique ways for the children to create their own ideas or follow examples!

Gardening
Gr. K-2 (Thursdays 10/3-10/31)
Dig in the dirt and grow crops in the beautiful East School Garden! Come and get your hands dirty! Learn about organic farming, harvest, sow seeds, make compost, build some beds, learn where food comes from, and have seeds and crops to take home!
Instructor: Bruce Frost is Education Coordinator for “Friends of Holly Hill Farm” in Cohasset and long time East School farm educator.
Gym Hockey

Come join us to add some new skills to your pick up games! We’ll learn stick-handling, shooting, and other floor hockey skills!

Harbor Media
Gr. 2-5 (Tuesdays 10/1-10/29)
Harbor Media’s Youth Media Television course offers students a chance to learn how to use modern video recording and editing tools in a fun and interesting way. Students will work in groups to create short films including interviews, dialogues, and how-to videos.

Lego Robotics and Coding-Animal Adventure!
Gr. 2-4 (Mondays 9/30-10/28) No Class 10/14
Embark on an exciting engineering and coding journey with our all new Animal Designs! Team up with a partner to construct a critter, then create a coding program to bring it to life!

Multisport

This all-encompassing program features a comprehensive selection of sports such as Soccer, Flag Football, and Cross Country. Parents can equip their children with invaluable life skills and expose them to the wonders of sports at an early age. Scratch and Microbit
Gr. 3-5 (Mondays 9/30-10/28) No Class 10/14
Welcome to the exciting world of coding with Scratch and Microbit!
This beginner-friendly class is designed for elementary students who are curious about technology and eager to create their own interactive projects. Students will learn the basics of programming in a fun and engaging way using Scratch, a visual coding language, and Microbit, a tiny programmable computer.

Skateboarding
Gr. K-5 (10/3-10/31)
Come learn skateboarding from Co-Owner of Technical Skateshop Bobby DePesa and the team riders of Technical. This class is for anyone interested in skateboarding whether you're just beginning or have been skateboarding for years. Kids will learn the basics of skateboarding, park awareness, safety, and the proper approach to many different tricks. Equipment: Skateboard, Pads (helmet is mandatory, knees, elbows, wrists strongly recommended)

Speed School
Gr. 3-5 *Girls Only* (Mondays 9/30-10/28) No Class 10/14
At the Speed School, athletes are poised to embrace Ije's philosophy of incorporating Speed, Plyometric, and Agility training techniques into their training regimen to improve their overall athleticism. Ije's ultimate objective is to guide and shape athletes' development so that they become more efficient, dynamic, and effective, through the use of their SPA training methodology.
